Tai Chi (pronounced tie-chee)
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese mind body practice for self-defense, healing and stress reduction.
The literal translation of Tai Chi is Supreme Ultimate. In Chinese philosophy, this is a way of describing the all-encompassing Yin and Yang principle or the dynamic, balanced and inter-dependent whole.
If studying the martial art, the practice is called Tai Chi Chuan—Supreme Ultimate Fist.
Although Tai Chi is a relatively new form, tracing its development back three centuries, it has deep links with much older martial arts, health and spiritual practices. Tai Chi has evolved from a secretive form of self-defense to a national form of exercise in China that is immensely popular world-wide.
Most people consider Tai Chi a form of Qigong because it moves, cultivates and circulates qi. Both Tai Chi and Qigong are considered moving meditations because of their slow and flowing movements connecting the breath, body and mind.
The main difference between these two forms that should be noted is that Tai Chi may have long choreography with complex movements while Qigong can be learned more easily with its simpler and more repetitive movements that stay basically in the same place. For this reason, a variety of simpler Tai Chi practices with the essential elements of Tai Chi are taught at the Golden Deer Studio.
The goal of my classes is to improve balance, mobilize joints, improve strength and flexibility and sharpen your mind. Because Tai Chi travels slowly through space and has a set movement sequence, it has been proven to be especially helpful with fall prevention and cognitive function. My classes begin with a warm up of silk reeling movements for joint mobilization, connection with the spiraling movements of nature and the development of a sense of rootedness for stability and calm energy. After warming up, I guide the class in a specific Tai Chi form with attention to posture, breathing and mindfulness. Although we are exercising, we are also developing the skill to be in the present moment, to listen to our body and to be in harmony as we move with deep relaxation.
